Why are you Scared of Linux?
Note: Before you read this Article I want to tell you that I am a big Linux fan and Linux being an open source Operating System is doing a Great Job.
Most of the people I know think Linux is very difficult for a layman to understand. They fear that after installing Linux they will not be able to do the normal tasks they do with Windows and thus they prefer paying money to Microsoft instead of even trying Linux.
There are lot of reasons behind this. Few reasons that I could figure out are:
1. Lack of Advertising about Linux compared to Windows. I understand that Linux is an open source product while Windows is Commercial but still I feel that there is lot of scope for advertising.
2. Lack of Awareness among the Retailers of Computers who advise the buyers to go for Windows instead of Linux. Some times its not just lack of awareness but also to gain more commission on the part of the retailer.
3. A very odd but a legitimate reason is that most of the time when people hear about linux is when a Geek is bragging about what he did on Linux last night and that layman will think “Man I don’t think Linux is for Guys like me!!”.
4. Most of the schools (atleast in India) teach their students Windows instead of Linux and thus the children when they grow up feel that windows is easy and safe to go with.
5. One reason for the Windows users not switching to Linux from Windows is that they are used to the working environment of Windows and So they are scared how they are going to do those regular task with Linux. Moreover there are many discouraging people around you who will be telling you stories of people who had to format their PC after installing Linux.
6. I also feel that the method of bring new versions every 6 months of different Linux distributions has many loopholes. First of all when a new release comes you are scared whether it is stable or not and whether his current apps will be compatible or not. So you wait for 1-2 months till you hear good reviews about it and just when you were about to feel that you got the one you can happily live with you hear about a new release which is better than that. Another reasons specially for Indian Users is that every time a new release comes out the user has to download it from net which is very time consuming considering the low internet speed in India.
7. The Last but the most important reason I feel why people don’t go for Linux is that the developers of Linux try to target more towards the technical guys instead of a normal user who is never going to code in his life. Linux only tries to compete with Windows in terms of a Better Development platform but it lags far behind from Windows in other areas. Though you may feel this reason to be invalid but this is what I feel.
I know a lot of Linux lovers will get hurt after reading this post and will be very angry at me but this is what is the harsh reality about Linux which can be changed if proper steps are taken by Linux.
Can you guys think of any other reasons? If so, I’d love it if you shared.
Note: The above written text are the author’s own views and they are not written to hurt the feelings of anybody.

yes, you’re right. people don’t want to change their habbits. If someone is close to new thinhgs, you can not do anything. Therefore, we must teach the importance of change, reform, innovation. it should be remembered that “Change can change even change”.
Many people doesn’t even want to try linux because it is so different from the stupid windows GUI. What’s not there in linux & what’s there in windows? Everything is there in linux that is useful & does what it need to do and only virus & lot of slow running processes are in windows that does all that you don’t want to do. Linux is truly for non-lazy people who really knows what they want to do with a computer & to me and like me many of them linux does great things. For most other people still windows + antivirus + virus + crap things are the very need. Chose linux just for a day and I am sure you won’t like windows at all. There are really good user friendly linux distros out there like Linux Mint, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Fedora etc and for all the good it does it is free. If you have interest in learning computer programs and how an operating system works and how it is designed linux at the core is very much a kernel and that kernel source is out there for you. Windows where are you? You suck and stink.
(1) Some Linux users like yourself are under the misconception that Linux is not widely used, This may be because they read all the FUD about Linux, until they see the real truth like this survey that Red Hat Linux did earlier this year > http://www.redhat.com/about/where-is-open-source/activity/
(2) again you have a misconception about the new releases every six months or so, mess up your system, if you stick with one distribution then you should have no problems what so ever,
(3) I find that using a commercial distribution not a wise thing to do, for the reason that they don’t work out of the box like some community distributions do,
(4) I in my infinite wisdom download and try out every distribution, then I give my opinions to people that would like to try out Linux, what distribution would suit them on their particular needs and systems,
(5) I find most new users have problems with the file names in fact I have problems with the file names myself so I understand the way they think,
(6) Windows Gamers think that they can’t play games on Linux so they stick with windows for that reason, When they see the multi 3D desktops and that they can play 3D action games they move over to Linux, Some play their windows games through wine
(7) Over this last couple of years Linux has got easier to install, easier to add and remove software, Linux is catching on fast Be cause there are no official statistics then it will always remain a world wide mystery on the over all use of Linux,
(8) Now that Linux Android has hit the phone market people will begin to realize just how powerful Linux is, that’s when phone users will make their move and install Linux on their computer so that they can sync their phones to their computers
From the few people (not advanced technical users) I have converted to Linux (I installed them Ubuntu). They were reluctant to switch but I ensure them that works better and helped them to install + some little training. They mainly need insurance. Once they get used, they like Ubuntu better than Windows.
In my opinion, people are mainly scared by the technical complexity. As vendors offer Windows then they stick with it because that is where they can get support either from vendors or from friends. I don’t think habits change is a big deal for most of people. Social effects might play greater influence. Two examples:
1) I do whatever my friends do. Which usually a powerful Windows computer which runs slow and overloaded with malware or a bunches of trialwares thay have no clues about.
2) I have something having an Apple logo on it. Because that make me look like elite. Habits change or do I really need it is secondary. Once a person has already spent $1000+ in a computer. This person convinced him/her self that he/she had made the perfect choice. I have found that people using Apple products are completely closed to any discussion.
My other friends who has more technical background and using Windows, most of them are not interested by Linux because either they suppose it complicate or because of the fears of restarting all over again. Not everybody is willing to trade a “Windows geek” status for a “Linux Newbie” one. Although “geek” here is actually very modest. They know where to navigate in Windows and they are comfortable with some applications they are used to.
In other words, Linux would have more chance to reach new and novice users. The best place to start would be at school. On the public side, Linux must improve the communication and defeat the complexity myth. Linux just needs a landmark case to shock the public opinion. Such a thing would be a celebrity saying something in favor of Linux. Then the sheep effect will kick in, and the snowball effect would be unstoppable.

One thing that can really scare people is the poor geek who refuses to use Windows but is stuck with hardware on which Linux doesn’t work well. (I’m looking at you, ASUS and ATI!)
They see this person who knows lots about computing struggling to keep their computer running at all… *I* wouldn’t consider switching to whatever software that geek is using, except I’m that geek
.
Now I said I have trouble like this, I’m sure someone will shout “go back to Windows”. Well, I’d rather spend that money on a different video card or mainboard instead.
And that should tell you something about how much more pleasant my experience using Linux is, even though it’s not pleasant. But people don’t think that far, and they’re probably right if they think they couldn’t fix the same problems if they got them.
But my problems are the exception. Either that, or there are lots of geeks scared to admit their computers won’t work because it might scare people away from Linux
.
While I love Linux, I must say that I would not ever completely switch until the OS reaches the level of maturity that Windows has. Call me whatever, but I use Mint as my main OS, but find that to play games (well, don’t tell me WINE is enough…), I have to use windows. I was trying to get a printer to work earlier, and I had to use a terminal, and I still couldn’t get it to work. THAT is the definition of an operating system that is not ready for mass consumption. I realize that almost everything that exists in the Linux community exists because of the hard work of people working for free, but the point is that Linux cannot prevail until COMPANIES start to make drivers and such for the OS because it simply isn’t “easy” enough. Unfortunately getting that to happen will turn Linux into just another M$ where it’s the money that fuels anything… Until every single thing you do in Linux can be done WITHOUT the terminal, it will never be able to brand itself as “simple”. Sorry.
I will continue to recommend Linux to people who use their computers for basic purposes though because it does those well, easily, and CHEAPLY.
I run several Linux servers, and my desktops, and laptop are all Linux. The only exception is the machine my wife uses, which is WinXP by her choice. Of course, I’m a geek.
I know how to fix things when an update comes down the pipe that cripples my X server.
How is the average Joe/Jane expected to know that kind of stuff? It makes it very hard to be an advocate of such a wonderful project as Linux, but you have to admit that I have a point.
I await the ultimate desktop

The problem with new LINUX (and also WINDOZE) distros is that they change things just for the sake of change. It’s as if auto manufacturers decided to put the steering wheel BEHIND the driver’s seat, just for the sake of …. Fifteen years ago, a friend (to my protests) upgraded me from Redhat 5 to 6, and the only difference I noticed was it worked better. Now, I’ve upgraded from UBUNTU 8 to 10, and, for example, the three windows buttons moved from upper right to upper left, and are backwards! WHY? I haven’t a clue, except they are trying to lure us from MacOS (which is already UNIX), instead of Windows. And, it works WORSE!
I’ll get used to it? Maybe, but I still have an older machine I have to use, that has UBUNTU 8 on it, and can’t upgrade. I’ve been using computers since 1968, so don’t tell me that I’ll get used to it.
I’m using Linux mint, its simply great.
Though sometimes I’m confused with security. Can you tell me how to ensure proper security in Linux mint8, for exp online payments.
Some of applications are not available for Linux, they works only in windows

HI
I LIKED YOUR ARTICLE, BUT A SMALL CORRECTION, ITS NOT LINUX, BUT IT IS GNU/LINUX. GNU IS THE UTILITIES WHICH RUN OVER THE LINUX KERNEL. SO ALWAYS SAY GNU/LINUX.
One simple reason people wont use Linux is, it doesn’t support Windows Mobile. As I have one, I have to boot through Windows for my Windows Mobile. Still i love my Ubuntu!
One more reason is that people keep telling that you have to do each and every thing on the command line interface. This misconception prevented me from using Linux for whole three years!
Advertising is a big issue- although OS X is very different and isn’t compatible with the majority of Windows applications, people generally find it much more appealing and would be willing to buy a Mac if it were convenient.
Linux offers most of the same advantages OS X does, but it’s faster, more personalized, simpler in many areas, and gives you a lot of choice and room to explore.
Ubuntu has done a lot to bring Linux’ public image closer to that of OS X, and it sort of has the same spirit of community the Mac originally had, but although Ubuntu is viable for the use of most users, it doesn’t satisfy every hardcore Windows users’ needs all the time. Some people really are way too ingrained into their habits, even to switch from one version of Windows to another (and many are willing to pirate and go through the more difficult installation/drivers/getting common applications).
So we should advertise Ubuntu, starting specifically with Netbooks and Wubi, the easiest ways for noobs to access it. Advertise it as a safe, fast, free, fun way to rediscover computing, and encourage exploration.
That way, they have a nice new toy to play with- the Ubuntu experience is very nice, after all.
Then, when they discover Wine, among other things, they may find that their needs are met very well by Ubuntu and take a more traditional approach to it.
Of course, shedding the idea of Linux being a mostly developer/geek-oriented OS has been taking place for a while, but it’s a gradual process. Ubuntu in particular seems to be doing a good job with its rebranding and new features (including crucial media player support and hopefully a Steam Client soon, which would presumably be for all distros), in making it not only viable, but overwhelmingly desirable as an alternative, even for grannies.
We just need Linux to gain more public exposure, then the applications, retailers, and users will come to embrace it. It’s already so good without a lot of industry support, so you can imagine how many people would use it exclusively if it were in stores at lower prices than Windows computers and had Adobe/Steam running well on them.
It’s really a lot of small things, but the biggest one is the lack of awareness. OS X has a lot of small issues that prevent people from switching, but it’s still a supported platform that most people are more than comfortable with, and excited about.
Linux can be the Mac of the next decade, I really believe that. Just think of when OS X came out- it’s always quietest just before the storm.
I’ve been using Linux off and on since Ubuntu 6 or so, and I currently use it on my laptop. I wrote my first Fortran program in 1968, so I’m not exactly new to the biz.
But the No. 1 problem I have is lack of information. I’m willing to go to great lengths to make things work satisfactorily for me, but you have to know what to do when you have a problem. Linux desperately needs a task-oriented man page (currently, if you don’t know the command to do something, you can’t even look it up). Some specific “how it works” info would also be invaluable. If, for example, you don’t know how to install a new hard drive, and you don’t know how the file system works, where the relevant config files reside and precisely what changes to make, you’re in trouble, and finding out how to do it involves almost Herculean efforts of web/forum searching, testing good- and bad-advice etc. Even then, your probabilities of success are not particularly good.
I love my Linux laptop, but then it does not have to operate my unsupported scanner, old and unsupported printer, built-in web cam, etc. So I keep Windo$e on my desktop machine where my extensive photographic needs are easily met.
Sure, it would be better if I knew more, and I’m willing to try, but once you get past the basics, really useful information is just too hard to come by.
I’m enormously grateful to all the folks who have made Linux what it is today. Their selfless efforts inspired me to put my own creative efforts in the public domain with the hope that educators can use them.

Gary

I want to Learn Linux Completely. I need source and step bye step Guidance. Can Anyone ready to advice ? Thanks in Advance.
Problem is only…I don’t know from where to start. Redhat,Comptia,Unix,Ubuntu…I know just how to Install Linux RH5.
Hi Ashik,
I’m amazed every time I find technical people who don’t know how to or don’t use Linux. I have no idea how someone can call them self a computer engineer or technical expert when they don’t know how to use Linux.
I’m fascinated by all aspects of computers. I think anyone who doesn’t know how to AT LEAST use Windows, Linux, BSD, and Mac OS X and thinks they are some sort of “computer expert” is just a n00b. Not knowing how to operate in a variety of environments is a weakness and you will end up paying for it!
C’mon, how can someone know so much about Windows and not be interested in learning Linux? Didn’t they enjoy learning all the cool things they could do with Windows? Don’t they want to learn all the cool things they can do with Linux? Isn’t that what makes using a computer so much fun? Why not learn what a USEFUL operating system is like?
—-Just Venting At This Point—-
Seriously, Windows has such an amazing LACK OF FUNCTIONALITY! I have a technical job and I think Microsoft should be embarrassed that the most useful tools for Windows are made by other companies. Have you ever tried to kill a hung process in Windows? Damn near impossible without a reboot! Most of the time, I have to use “Process Explorer”. Not only that, but I have to download it first! WTF!?! Seriously Microsoft, just include the F’n tool in Windows! I constantly find myself downloading Windows ports of Linux tools in order to get a job done. Thank God for a Windows version of cURL. Try automating things in Windows without VB script or another tool. Major FAIL Windows! Shame on you!
Also, how bad of an idea was the registry!!! The registry is the reason that programs on Windows cannot be backed up! Yeah, you can backup the registry but not individual programs.
—–Talking to people who use Windows—–
BTW, you spent ~$200 on “Vista” because it was all cool and “XP” was going away soon but then you found out it sucked so you spent ~$200 more on “Win7″ because it was just as cool but sucked a little less… THAT’S CALLED HUSTLING! Now you have to go buy an antivirus which is going to slow down your computer so you better go buy a RAM upgrade. Then you find out that there is a “zero day vulnerability” (Google it n00b) out for NetBios/SMB and your antivirus is out of date (or worse, you run McAfee) and your computer is owned so now you have to pay ~$300 to Geek squad to backup and reload your computer. Have fun using Windows.
Support Free, Use Fedora.
Love,
Acheron
As a subscriber to PC Mag. I had read about linux so when the hard drive failed in an old E machine I installed a new hard drive and installed Ubuntu 8.04. I had internal wireless cards in both computers at the time but was never able to get Ubuntu to work wireless. It took me two days to get the printer to work. I have never gotten the scanner to work. A year or so later Ubuntu 9.10 came out and right out of the box my usb wireless card worked. With updates I was able to get the internal wireless working. I have tried open susey the newest release but no wireless support, a shame because I really liked how it worked. None of the above distros worked the wireless in my laptop. Now comes Fedora 13 the newest release. Off the live CD, in the laptop it finds the built in wireless and locates and installs the software for the HP printer and prints wirelessly. Perfect!!! XP could never do that. This is as near plug and play as windows is. So as each distro improves with a little word of mouth some advertising In the open market not gust computer mags.the popularity should grow. Now if I could gust get my son to try Linux….
I have a three screen system on my laptop :
1 – 15,4″ Laptop screen
2 – 22″ HDMI screen
3 – 22″ USB screen (Display Link)
The USB Screen doesn’t work with Linux. When Using only two screens, it works well, but only if I keep the default drivers. In that case, I can’t play to my favorites games.
When I choose to use nvidia drivers, dual-screen works very bad : windows are opening betwenn the two screens, and I’m forced to use the same resolution on both.
However, Linux is very good for pentest (a lot of usefull tools). For example, cracking a Wep key with Windows is so loooonng (or expansive).
That’s why I’m using both Linux and Windows, depending on what I want to do. Windows is for office (and MS Office
), games, Internet, and linux is for security.
IMHO the two systems are good, that’s all…
The horse and buggy would never be replaced by the Automobile, Ford’s are better than Chevy’s. No home needs 2 or more TV’s. The Windows Operating System is and always will be flawed. GNU Linux and BSD(UNIX) are far from perfect but are Secure Operating System. A complete Operating System. Windows is not complete but can be for a higher price. The trouble with Windows is and always has been the Gates that is why the TOC total cost of ownership is high, Too High. But hey Windows has been great for making money, and I thank-you.
I fear open-source “free” is difficult to compete with “free” and I do not have free stuff.
We need Windows to make money (sometimes people steal your money when banking with Windows). I use GNU Linux to protect my money and get things done.
and I am just another anal vent with an opinion and not alone.
I somewhat agree with you but not with your last point. What makes you think Ubuntu’s developers target the advanced user?
Actually i m also a linux newbie but i like linux far better than windows..
The biggest obstacle in moving from windows to linux is offline installation of s/w …. In windows, we get a ready made package which can be installed with few clicks…
But in linux either we have to compile to source code (not easy 4 novice) or use a package such as deb/rpm, which shows dependency issue most of the times (we need diff. installer package for every different version of linux) ….
hey can anyone please help me with the wireless internet i tried everything in the linux os to connect to the internet useing the built in wifi card I put in linux becouse its a better OS than windows but i still use windows for other stuff but if there is any driver or something i need to download for linux please tell me i am registered with this site and i am a Hungry Hacker in Learning so if anyone can tell me a site that will give me a driver or some kind of program that will install the wireless card and give me the internet connectivity
thanks, almir
@4Lm1R
Can u tell that which linux distribution (version also) are you using?
Most of the recent distro version have all major built in drivers.
but still if there is problem plz tell the name and model of ur wi-fi card…. ( if u dont know know, then u can give the model no of ur laptp)..
Ya fully agreed. What i think that the no. 4 reason causes more unawareness in India. People here don’t want to change their habits. I m practicing for RHCE, but my friends don’t even want to hear bout Linux.
I feel bad for both me nd Linux wen they make joke on me, even wen i know
that Linux is far more better and secured than Windows and also open source. But i believe that the things are going to change sooner. I have also take classes of Linux in very small place Korba and i hav seen the craze in students. Lets hope for the best
Long gone are the days of the difficult Linux Operating System install, drivers, awesome desktop graphics in many of the Linux Mainstream Distribution. There are many Linux Distro that will cause your hair to fall off, melt your RAM, nuke your toast and cause your pets to run away from home, some can take 3 days to build and if one wants to try most are available on the Internet. Linux plays many games, more are being ported at a rapid rate. Linux plays my favorite games WOW, STO and Silent Hunter it may not play your favorite game, heck some Windows games will not run on Windows or have difficult doing so. Many, many times I have blamed an Operating system on some hardware issue and after asking a question in a forum discovered I was the cause of the problem. Sometimes it is difficult to read what the installer is telling me and who read help text. The trouble I have with Windows is it will not run any of my Linux Software.
Hello everyone!!
I totally agree when everyone here is worried about documentation, not documentation itself, but to be easier and more accesible to everyone to read AND understand quickly and easily.
I’m just a recent linux user, using it for about 4 years, a lifetime Windows user, a recent hackintosh user, a recent PC-BSD user, and soon a retail Mac OSX user. My main reason to pull off windows was because I was sick of it, even windows 7 proves to be a resource hog and still makes me mad how I have to install a PDF reader every time I do a fresh install!!!
Nevertheless, I study electronics instead of purely software, and must say that with lots of effort i’ve found how to work my stuff without depending on windows most of the time, thankfully to cross-platform software. Eagle, Matlab, Maple, Labview, Arduino, Piklab, Xilinx, Qt, Python and Wine are really useful… when some application just makes me want to hang myself, Use a spare virtual machine with windows XP, as sometimes Windows 7 has trouble with some applications I need even at these heights of the year.
I think many problems can be solved out if people is well documented about cross-platform software, and of course exposing advantages of using a user-friendly distro of Linux instead of Windoze. Nowdays all you need to know is applications for eye-candy and usefull applications.
I’d recommend go for ubuntu and linux mint for complete beginners… when people may get used a bit may try oter distros like fedora and sabayon, distros like arch linux and gentoo are just scary even for me… many headaches I got through installing gentoo in a virtual machine…
Of course, bear in mind some applications I found can be used without dependending on windows… It’s a bit lenghty list of applications that may work in Linux:
–> Common usage:
1) OpenOffice:
OO Writer = M$ Word
OO Calc = M$ Excel
OO Impress= M$ Powepoint
OO Base = M$ Access
2) Evolution: email manager
3) Web browsers:
Firefox, Chrome/Chromium, Opera Can be installed in Linux.
4) Bittorrent and P2P:
Transmission, Vuze, Ktorrent, Amule, Jdownloader
5) Multi-protocol instant-messaging (chat) programs (for me is a bye bye to windows live messenger):
Empathy, Pidgin, Emesene–> this one resembles the original WLM. All of them support a good variety of webcams, Ricoh, Genius and logitech webcams work flawlessly.
6) Imaging and multimedia:
Digikam, F-spot, gthumb (for managing photos);
Cheese (webcam suite);
XBMC (media center application);
gimp (image manipulation);
pitivi, openshot (video edition);
Recordmydesktop (cantasia alternative);
amarok, rythmbox, banshee, VLC(recommended), kaffeine, totem (multimedia players);
–> Engineering and developers software(many of them cross-platform):
Java IDE: Eclipse, Netbeans.
C/C++ IDE: Qt creator, EID Anjuta.
C#: Mono —> Don’t know about the IDE yet…
Python IDE: IDLE
PHP IDE: coffecup (works in windows too), bluefish, eclipse may work too
Eagle: PCB Design
Matlab: Math and programming suite
Labview: Electronics emulation and interaction suite.
Scilab: Matlab clone with limited features
Arduino: Easily programmable and cheap open-source AVR development kit, it’s IDE is java based.
–> And just for eye-candy:
cairo-dock: a fully customizable dock emulating the look of the OSX one, made in C/C++.
If someone wants who is beginner to linux wants to try a full-blown linux with many apps to start with and to easily make knowledge of yourselves, maybe you can try ubuntu reloaded:
http://ubuntureloaded.blogspot.com/ —> I hope this is not considered SPAM
as it’s not my website.
I hope this comment helps!!!
Regards.
P.S. : If you just need things that just work, or are really easy to make them work, try Ubuntu or Fedora. Anyway, everyone is free to choose the distribution needed to fit any individual or collective purpose.

Another reason could b that……that micrsoft is paying much more attention towards devaloping thier windos program then linux………….and so it is also much more capable and user friendly
windows might be crappy with viruses and shit but thats also because hackers love it… there u go..
linux doesn’t have the leading edge on windows coz people are too busy to spend time learning about it. when they are okay with windows, why the hell use another os?
when only the basic needs of the most basic common people are emailing, surfing, gaming, watching movies and doing office work why would they want to switch to a new os when they are sufficiently well comfortable with windows? and this whole damn debate between windows and linux is between geeks only… common people don’t give a shit.
teach a computer illiterate at first how to use linux, and he will use that only i guess for the rest of his life if his computing needs are very basic. teach another illiterate how to use windows, and he will keep using windows.. thats the story, whatever they’ve been using from the very beginning and that thing has delivered sufficiently, then they won’t budge away from that environment. simple as that. why the heck take up the pain of learning new shit when they aren’t the interested types?
microsoft chairman bill gates wanted every home in the world to have a computer, and learn from it the rest of the various things in life on various subjects in an effective and helping way to speed up the progress of our civilization. windows is an os which does just that and has been in it for a long time before linux could actually get more popular…but then it wasn’t windows’ fault that linux didn’t.
so there u go, linux is feared….no, its ignored. feared are the things the human mind wouldn’t want to comprehend beyond reason as the personal logic advises… so when we are talking about the general population, we should keep in mind not only our community of people – programmers, netwrk admins, etc computer field related guys. so when really “common” people are talked about, “fearing” linux, i think we should really take note of the point that changing from one os to other for them is like changing way of travelling from road to by air… so learning to fly for them is unnecessary complication. why take it thus? so sticking to road travel is “safer” and “faster” even though that will be true for the air travel then the road ways. but mind set is all there is.
Hi Ashik,
I have a doubt, Teme which is best to work with programs like c, java and oracle. Does linux is best to use for web developers. Help me by differentiate windows and linux.
