Setting Up A Hackers Workstation
Hi guys, Hope you have gone through the previous article and you’re now ready to take on the hacking stuff. At very beginning you have to make your workstation ready, so that things will be available to you at one click.
You have to collect some of the tools, Operating System & documentation on your PC with a very clear format.
Operating System:
Which OS to use, choice is all yours. Windows in all cases is not so ‘made for hacking’ according to me. Whatever XP,Vista or windows 7. They are all just OS which are made for novice public which can learn computers.
If you are a regular Linux user, Then shift to Backtrack Linux. It is Linux made for hacker geeks & completely embedded with all penetration testing tools in it. You can Download Backtrack here. But if you have never used Linux & wish to learn then you can use basic Linux distributions like Ubuntu. But remember that you or not supposed to learn Linux desktop environment like windows, you have to learn its shell or terminal. (command prompt of Linux)
As I said Choice is all yours you can go with Windows also. Its all on you. (Suggestion: If you can’t make it habit to learn new things, you can never be a HACKER)
Hackers Toolkit:
In your root directory or C:/ in windows make a folder named Tools. So that you can access all tools from command prompt easily E.g. c:/tools/example
Go surf for these tools enlisted.
- NMAP : Enumeration
- Nessus : Scanning & Enumeration

Hi i am having windows Xp can i go with it.
Can i learn hacking? Can i hack gprs of airtel & idea? I dont have much experience but i had hacked airtel gprs but now that trick is not working.
What you learn was a trick or tweak. Which is far away from hacking. For hacking airtel you need to get in to there servers. Which is totally illegal And you can screw yourself up & end up in jail for that.
You need to learn hacking then learn networks, open source development & coding. Go in reverse direction . Then you can hack
i use airtel gprs with p1i(opera mobile 8.65). can my communication be spied? how can i know? how can i prevent it?
True that, true that.
Before you were all crackers and script kiddies, today we are going to teach you to become hackers.
For you Linux users you might want an additional program on your computer. It is called Wine, without it you will not be able to run Cain & Abel. BackTrack 3 has it pre-installed (BT4 probably does too, but my experience is with BT3 not BT4).
When you go to download BackTrack, get versions 3 and 4. Version 4 is highly superior to version 3, but when it comes to local hacking if you have version 4 and they have no DVD drive your out of luck, so it is a good idea to have a copy of BT3 also. ;D
Also for those of you using Linux, there are alternative Anti-Virus programs to AVG Free. For instance you may decide that you instead want Clam AV. Both Clam and AVG are excellent programs and are available for Linux. If you can manage it I would have them both so that you can scan individual files with both scanners.
Another note when it comes to Anti-Virus (gotta make sure your own box is protected before you break into others) there is an excellent online virus scanner I would like you to bookmark called the Jotti Online Malware Scanner. It is located here.
If you need any assistance please feel free to ask in the forums for help.

Thanks Zell,
For making it more easier for these guys to learn.
This was a good article. Good tools you have on your list. Been trying to find a good place to learn more. I like to start from the begining. Looking forward to learning more, plus in your forum do you have a certain link on what’s the next step after you have the tools, and Linux software you are going to use?
Other thing I tried to sign up for your forum but the Confirmation code: does not work. All I see if the red X.
Please advise what I could do or If I could have the vip code in case you don’t figure out what’s wrong.
Thanks,
Sr.Sphinx.
Why Don’t you only specify the uses and the functioning of each of the above software in your posts.
What about Mac? I’m don’t have mac right now. But I’m going to buy a Macbook Pro (very soon), and then I want to learn hacking.
Are there alternatives for the programs in your list or should I use dual boot to use linux?
@Sr.Sphinx :
We are creating great new posts for your next step & further journey in Hacking.
Regarding Forum, We are working on problem. Soon you can register easily. And I will inform you about that.
@ Sarath
You ll get information about all the tools individually but, each tool need to have certain experience in its base platform. E.g using Nmap needs knowledge Unix Shell.
So I am first building some basic articles for all to begin. If you know all these things before then, we are going to produce some hardcore hacking thing, But I guess taking little time for that is better idea.
Explaining all tools in upcoming posts.
@Atimmer
You can do great hacking stuff from Mac also.
But Having Linux with dual boot will be a great idea, as you can increase your knowledge in both of OS & its vulnerabilities.
@Amol Wagh
Having a Mac is actually a very good idea. It is a system that in the hacking and security communities is generally left alone. It is often regarded as the most secure of the operating systems.
Mac tools are a little bit more difficult to find than tools for Linux, but they are findable. And because Max OSX is based on the Linux kernel, a lot of the command line based tools will work on Mac with very little modification. If you can not find a Mac version of the tools you need, ask for them from the author of the tools. They will often be more than happy to help you out.
If not, there is always the option of a second computer, dual booting, or my favorite method, Virtual Machines.
My Current setup is:
Windows 7 Computer
(Connected to via a KVM switch)
Ubuntu Linux Computer (currently with a Back Track 3 CD in it)
(on the Ubuntu Computer)
Windows XP VM
Windows 98 VM
Fedora Core 9 VM
Ubuntu VM
Black XP VM
Windows 7 VM
The power of Virtual Machines is that you can run many many different operating systems easily within your normal Operating System. A virtual machine acts as a separate computer inside of your computer. This enables you to experiment with different operating systems without the risk of screwing up your computer.

@Zell Faze:
What program do you use primary to set up a Virtual Machine?
VMware is a widely use application all over the internet. But you can try any alternative, just google for it.
